# Tour-Ed Mine & Museum > Tour-Ed Mine & Museum is a family-owned coal mine attraction located at 748 Bull Creek Road, Tarentum, Pennsylvania — approximately 20 minutes northeast of downtown Pittsburgh. Founded by Ira Wood in 1964 and opened to the public in 1970, Tour-Ed Mine offers guided underground coal mine tours led by experienced miners. Visitors descend 160 feet below the earth's surface for a half-mile journey through a real coal mine, learning about mining history, geology, and the daily life of coal miners from the 1850s to today. The 13-acre grounds also feature a museum with thousands of authentic antiques and coal mining artifacts, an environmental train ride, a railroad caboose, a restored 1785 log home, and picnic pavilions. Tour-Ed Mine has given over one million tours and is one of the few real coal mine attractions open to the public in the United States. ## Company Information - Founded: 1964 (opened to public 1970) - Location: 748 Bull Creek Road, Tarentum, PA 15084 - Phone: (724) 224-4720 - Email: info@tour-edmine.com - Season: Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday - Owner/Operator: Bob Black (third-generation) ## Services & Experiences - Guided underground coal mine tours (160 feet below surface, half-mile journey) - Tour-Ed Museum (antiques, coal mining artifacts, general store items) - Environmental train ride - School field trips (history and earth science curriculum-aligned) - Birthday party packages (mine tour, museum, train ride, reserved pavilion) - Group tours and private events - The Haunted Mine (seasonal haunted attraction, September through November) - Picnic pavilions and 13-acre park grounds ## Primary Pages - /: Homepage — Pittsburgh's premier coal mine attraction overview - /attractions-in-pittsburgh/: Coal Mine Tour Information — details about the underground mine tour experience - /book-a-tour/: Reserve a Tour — online reservation system for tours and group bookings - /what-to-expect/: What to Expect — visitor preparation guide, accessibility, safety, and FAQs - /pittsburgh-field-trips/: School Field Trips — educational field trip information for schools - /pittsburgh-history-field-trips/: History Field Trips — American Industrial Revolution and coal mining history curriculum - /pittsburgh-science-field-trips/: Science Field Trips — earth science, geology, and mining technology curriculum - /mine-museum-pittsburgh/: Tour-Ed Museum — collection of authentic antiques and mining artifacts - /coal-mine-history-pittsburgh/: Coal Mine History — the history of Tour-Ed Mine from 1850 to present - /grounds-attractions/: Grounds & Attractions — 13-acre park with 14 attractions - /working-coal-mine/: Working in the Coal Mine — how coal miners worked from the 1850s to today - /coal-mine-map/: Park Map — interactive map of the 13-acre grounds - /birthday-parties/: Birthday Parties — unique underground birthday party packages - /pittsburgh-events/: Events — community events, flea markets, live music - /haunted-houses-pittsburgh/: The Haunted Mine — seasonal haunted attraction (fall) - /tour-ed-mine-contact/: Contact Us — directions, hours, and contact information ## Key Differentiators - One of the few real coal mine attractions open to the public in the United States - Tours led by experienced miners with firsthand knowledge - Over one million tours given since 1970 - 160 feet underground — visitors experience a genuine coal mine environment - Curriculum-aligned school field trips covering PA history and earth science standards - 13-acre grounds with 14 distinct attractions beyond the mine tour - Family-owned and operated for three generations - Located just 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh
