We provide one of the most unique educational field trips for schools in Pittsburgh. We combine mining history and earth science with an incredible hands-on experience ½ mile beneath the earth's surface.
The Tour-Ed Mine is a perfect fit for elementary schools and middle schools looking for an educational and exciting field trip for their students. We also cater to other organizations in Western Pennsylvania like Scouts and groups of 25 or more.
Our tour guides are experienced coal miners who begin your unique field trip in the entrance of the mine. Your guide will take you back through time in a history-filled adventure showcasing past mining equipment and explaining how coal mining was performed from the 1850s through the present.
Student miners will put on miners' caps and get into our man-trip coal car that will safely take everyone ½ mile below the earth's surface. Here you will experience first-hand what it's like to be in a coal mine.
Your experienced guide will provide an exciting earth science education while operating various mining equipment and telling some really "coal" stories!
Your students will learn how coal was mined to fuel the steel-making furnaces in Pittsburgh during the American Industrial Revolution and how immigrants from all over the world were recruited to mine coal. A living lesson in Western Pennsylvania heritage.

Miners would take canaries into a coal mine to detect the presence of dangerous methane gas or carbon monoxide. Today, coal miners have sophisticated equipment to detect and remove these dangerous gases.
