Mine Car Access

The mine tram cars sit very low to the ground and require stepping down to enter and climbing out to exit. Guests with limited mobility, knee or hip issues, or difficulty getting in and out of low seating should be aware this may be challenging. Underground Temperature

The mine maintains a constant 52–55°F year-round. It's a refreshing break from summer heat, but bring a light layer. The surface grounds and museum are at normal outdoor temperatures.

Small Groups

Tour groups are kept to 25 or fewer for a personal, engaging experience. Your guide is a real coal miner who knows the mine inside and out.

How long is the Tour-Ed Mine tour?

The underground portion is approximately 30 minutes. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours total exploring the mine, museum, and grounds.

Is Tour-Ed Mine safe for kids?

Absolutely. The mine has been professionally modified for visitor safety and is led by experienced guides. Children of all ages are welcome. Hard hats are provided.

How cold is it inside the mine?

The mine stays 52–55°F year-round. We recommend bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Yes. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. A representative will contact you to confirm.

Is Tour-Ed Mine open year-round?

Public tours run Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday through Sunday. School and group tours are available Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Can I bring a stroller or wheelchair into the mine?

Unfortunately, strollers and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated inside the mine due to the mine car transport and underground terrain. The museum and above-ground areas are more accessible. Please call (724) 224-4720 to discuss your needs.

What is the group tour discount?

Groups of 25 or more receive discounted rates: $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for children 12 and under. The first 2 teachers are free with school groups.

Are pets allowed at Tour-Ed Mine?

No. For safety reasons, no animals — including pets — are permitted underground. The mine contains over 9 miles of tunnels, and any animal that becomes separated from its handler underground cannot be recovered.
